why we love moodboards
Our latest collection, Studio Moodboards, got us thinking about how much we truly love and believe in the power of a good, physical moodboard. So much so, we decided to blog about it. ;)
For us, it’s important to have a place in the creative process that is primarily about design - not function. Because while function is important and has its place, there’s a reason you’ve been hired to design. Will the project be light and airy? Ominous and moody? Textured or smooth? The possibilities are endless, and moodboards have a way of allowing us to showcase our creative ability before the project has even begun.
Let us put our metaphor hats on for a second: Think of moodboards almost like the small but mighty lifeboat that's attached to every cruise ship: they make you feel safe at the thought of it just being there, if the journey gets bumpy, you know exactly where that life-raft-moodboard is located, and while you may not fully utilize it, you’re going to be more than thankful it was there to get you started on your [design] journey.
Let’s prove why…
A FUN, FREEING START TO A PROJECT
Pressure is off! This is the artist at work, the first palette coming together, this part should be FUN. Think back to those 90’s sleepovers (unless this ages us) where you stayed up late cutting out photos of Teen Bop and placed them in a scrapbook or poster board. Let your creativity run wild here, because it can always be refined later in the process.
SOLIDIFIES THE AESTHETIC
Once the moodboard starts coming together, this solidifies many decisions moving forward for both the designer and client. You can begin to see the colors, font, and style start to come together and you’re able to really hone in on which direction the project is headed.
BRINGING THE CONCEPT TO CREATION
Whether you’re working on a project solo or in a team, moodboards are the ideal way to showcase what was being concepted in your mind. As we know, art and design are often much better visually shown rather than verbally trying to explain. How does one even begin to explain the magic of a moody fall? Spoiler alert: you don’t. You SHOW it.
GETS EVERYONE ON THE SAME PAGE
Once your moodboard has taken shape, it’s an invaluable piece of time and effort that allows you and your team to all be aligned on the same page.
Susie in the marketing department knows not to incorporate any green because that *clearly* isn’t showcased anywhere in the moodboard. More effort on the moodboard on the front end pays off, and it’s a clearer direction moving forward on any project.
A GUIDE TO REFER BACK TO
Last but not least, it’s a safety blanket you can always refer back to! If you get stuck anywhere along the process, go back to the drawing board. Back to where you were inspired in the first place. When there are bumps in the road with any project, the mood board allows a place of security where you can go back to again and again.
So, suffice to say, we love moodboards for good reason.
